Tuberculosis has largely been eradicated in the industrialized world, but the highly infectious disease kills more than a million people in poorer countries. India accounts for more than a quarter of cases - despite setting a goal of eliminating TB by the end of this year. Critics say that's unrealistic - thanks to low government spending and shortage of medicines. Sadhus: India’s holy men are rock stars at the Kumbh Mela | DW News
It's commonly referred to as the largest human gathering of all - the Hindu pilgrimage Kumbh Mela in the city of Prayagraj in northern India. The six-week festival only takes place in certain years, and is now in its third week. Among it's main attractions are sadhus – holy men, revered for their spiritual virtue and renunciation of worldly pleasures. Kumbh Mela: The world's largest religious gathering | DW News
It's being billed as the biggest gathering of humanity in history. More than 400 million Hindu pilgrims are expected to take part in India's Maha Kumbh Mela religious festival. The celebration is held every 12 years in the city of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh state, where the Ganges and Yamuna rivers meet. Hindus believe that ritual bathing helps them gain salvation.
